Los Angeles Downtown
Architecture Tour February 8, 2025
KPLA members took an architectural tour of Downtown LA on February 8th from 10am to 4pm with architect Taesik Kim, the author of “Reading Los Angeles Architecture” – a book created by architect Taesik Kim with photos of 10 important buildings in LA.
This architectural walking tour took time to look around important buildings in Downtown LA while listening to the explanations of architect Taesik Kim.
Starting with the Disney Concert Hall, we visited the Dorothy Chandler Music Center, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles, the LA Police Department Building, the LA Superior Court Building, the CalTran Building, and the Broad Museum, and had the opportunity to learn about various buildings. In particular, the Caltrans building is made entirely of steel and is enormous, occupying one block. It is a gigantic work of metal made by combining various methods. Neon artist, Keith Sonnier, attached neon lights to the steel bar in the entrance space.
Through this architectural tour, I learned how many wonderful buildings there are in Downtown LA, which I had previously overlooked, and the tour was even more rewarding as I listened to architect Taesik Kim’s explanation of architectural styles. (Lunch was at Redbird Restaurant downtown).
